Federal authorities are investigating an "attempted arson attack" involving molotov cocktails at the Kansas City office of Rep. Emanuel Cleaver,D-Mo..

Police arrived on the scene after alarms went off around 3 a.m. Thursday, and they discovered a broken window. There was no fire, but two liquor bottles stuffed with paper towels were found outside the window, according to an ABC News report.

Local police were joined by the bomb squad and the ATF. The FBI is now handling the investigation, according to ABC News.

"As has been reported, early this morning, a window was broken at Congressman Cleaver's Kansas City, Missouri office when an individual attempted to throw an item or items at the building," John Jones, Cleaver's chief of staff, said in a statement. "This is the second incident within the last three years. The Kansas City Police have completed their initial survey of the scene and we await their report. None of the staff was in the building, and because Congress is in session, Congressman Cleaver is in Washington, D.C."

Later in the day, Cleaver mentioned the incident on Twitter:

Congressional Black Caucus chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, called the incident an “attempted arson attack.”

"This type of abhorrent behavior is the most ineffective means of voicing discontent or disagreement," Fudge said in the ABC story. "I expect a speedy, full and thorough investigation into this incident by law enforcement, so that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted."
