Indiana Gov. Pence to Launch News Website

By    |   Monday, 26 Jan 2015 11:03 PM

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, a Republican, is poised to launch a state-run news website that he says will break news stories before the independent press does.

According to the Indianapolis Star, the website will be called Just IN.

"At times, Just IN will break news — publishing information ahead of any other news outlet. Strategies for determining how and when to give priority to such 'exclusive' coverage remain under discussion," according to the Star, which cited a question-and-answer sheet handed out to the media.

The website will reportedly publish some news stories first and then make them available to other media outlets in Indiana. Former Star reporter Bill McCleery will direct the endeavor.

The Star reported that there are two full-time employees on the website's staff, with a combined salary of nearly $100,000.

The stories, according to the Star, will "range from straightforward news to lighter features, including personality profiles."

Pence's news outlet will partially target smaller newspapers with a limited staff. They will be able to take stories written by Just IN and re-publish them.

The idea, however, has mixed reviews.

"I think it's a ludicrous idea," said Jack Ronald, publisher of the Portland Commercial Review, told the Star. "I have no problem with public information services — the Purdue University agriculture extension service does a great job. But the notion of elected officials presenting material that will inevitably have a pro-administration point of view is antithetical to the idea of an independent press."

Pence is considering a White House run next year.

This is not the only government-run news network in the U.S. Illinois has Government News Network, which distributes press releases to the media, while the federal government operates Voice of America.

Pence Tweeted about his foray into the media world Monday evening:

Pence served in the House starting in 2003 before winning Indiana's 2012 gubernatorial election. He took office in 2013.

He has yet to commit to running for president in next year's election, but rumors are swirling that he could launch a bid.
