A public school's superintendent in Michigan has denounced the original American flag sewn by Betsy Ross as symbol to some of "exclusion and hate."

Daniel Behm, head of the Forest Hills Public Schools, criticized the flag which represents the original 13 American colonies after students displayed it at a football game along with a Donald Trump "Make America Great Again" banner.

The flag, trotted out by Forest Hills Central High, was criticized as inappropriate by school leaders, parents and community members from Ottawa Hills High, the predominately black high school which hosted the game, MLive reports.

In a letter to the communities of both schools, Behm wrote:

"To wave a historical version of our flag, that to some symbolizes exclusion and hate, injects hostility and confusion to an event where no one intended to do so.

"To our gracious hosts …and to the student-athletes, coaches, officials, and supporters of both teams, we are truly sorry."

According to MLive, the Betsy Ross flag is controversial, in part, "because it is embraced by white nationalist organizations whose members claim a superior birthright."

The 13-star flag became the official United States Flag on June 14th, 1777 during the nation's slavery era.
