Mich. Vets 'Furious' With Criticism of Proposed Soldier Monument

Michigan veterans are "furious" at a suburban Detroit town's criticism of a proposed fallen soldier monument featuring a pair of boots and a helmet atop an M-16 rifle.

Friends of American Veterans is seeking approval from Milford, Mich., parks and town officials for the traditional "battlefield cross" monument near a current Veterans Memorial, the online Hometown Life reports.

The plan calls for an 8-foot-tall monument, including a 43-inch granite base topped by a 52-inch bronze sculpture of combat boots, rifle with dog tags and a helmet on top.

But some village officials object to the gun and the monument's prominent location, the news outlet reports.

"All the vets I talked to … are furious," FAV's founder, Bear Hall, told Hometown Life.

"People who gave me money are furious. Everyone's thinking the same thing we're thinking: We didn't win the war by throwing sticks and stones."

"It's the ultimate sacrifice," he added. "Somebody gave their life to protect and serve this country and they should be remembered. They should never be forgotten."

Hall, who's raised $12,000 in donations, said he'd consider a smaller-sized memorial, and even a different location, "but we don't want some foofoo fountain."

Korean War vet Ron Nevorski, a former Marine and member of the FAV board, said the fallen soldier memorial makes an important statement. Hometown Life notes the "battlefield cross" has been traditionally used by troops when a fellow soldier is killed at war.

"If people are worried about their kids seeing a gun, take away their video games and take away their TVs,"  Nevorski told Hometown Life. "Don't let them hunt, and don't teach them to protect themselves.

"These guys, these fallen heroes, have given everything for our freedom."

The plan comes up for discussion at a village meeting April 20, when Hall vows to attend "with a lot of people," Hometown Life reports.
