Gen. Hayden: Hard to 'Defend Ourselves' in Shooting Like Orlando

Former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden gave a chilling warning to MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program about the new style of warfare the U.S. faces within its borders.

"We may have driven the enemy into a place where it's very hard for us to follow," Hayden told MSNBC. "This may have been an attack without connections, without any trail. And it's going to be very difficult now for us to defend ourselves against this sort of thing."

Apparent lone-wolf shooters like Omar Mateen, who allegedly gunned down more than 100 night-club goers early Sunday morning, killing 49, are able to thrive in a free society.

"I could sense a sense of resignation … that we're getting pretty close to the limits as to what the what the state can do without changing our nature as a society," Hayden told MSNBC.

And greater dangers await if self-radicalized individuals are able to spread a sense of being ostracized and alienated.

"It happens in immigrant communities, particularly in second-generation individuals," Hayden told MSNBC. "But as I've said before, it matters what gang you join in terms of this isolated individual. And we are driving these folks, I fear, in the direction of ISIS. I mentioned before, the U.S., we've got radicalized individuals, not yet radicalized communities. We can actually create that second reality."
