A running back from Marshall University was arrested Wednesday and accused of beating a same-sex couple.

Stewart Butler, 23, has also been suspended from participating in any team-related activities after allegedly assaulting two gay men on April 5 after he witnessed them kissing on the street in Huntington, West Virginia, the Herald-Dispatch is reporting.

"We take all accusations against our student-athletes seriously, especially those of such a sensitive nature," said Mike Hamrick, Marshall's director of athletics. "We hold all of our 350-plus student-athletes to a high standard, on and off the playing surface, as ambassadors of Marshall University.

The Huntington Police Department is reporting that Butler saw the two men kissing while he was a passenger in a car, and got out of the car and began making derogatory comments to them. He allegedly hit both men with a closed fist.

The beating was captured on video by one of the victims, police said.

Butler was arrested Wednesday after he reportedly turned himself in, CBS Sports is reporting.

He is charged with two counts of misdemeanor battery. He was released on $10,000 bond.

Even though the charges are considered a misdemeanor, the case has been turned over to the FBI.

"The entire university community is shocked and disappointed to learn the details surrounding the alleged actions," said Gary C. White, Marshall's interim president.

"The type of violent, bigoted behavior reported to have been perpetrated by this student is not tolerated at Marshall University. Period. This is an extremely serious matter," White added.
