'Homeland' Actor Mandy Patinkin: I Can Change Trump's View on Refugees

Actor Mandy Patinkin is confident he can change how President Donald Trump feels about refugees and the claimed threat they pose to national security.

"I know it would get through to him. I believe it," Patinkin told NBC News. "I believe it because Donald Trump is, first and foremost, a human being. And human beings have hearts and compassion and morality and ethics and I believe, at Donald Trump's core, he too has that."

An actor singer, and voice artist, Patinkin is one of the stars of the "Homeland" TV show. He's also a refugee activist.

Trump signed an updated executive order Monday that will put a temporary halt to refugees coming to the United States from six countries with a terror presence. It will go into effect March 16.

Patinkin said there is a lot of misinformation out there regarding refugees.

"There's real fear and there's made-up, false fear, OK?" Patinkin said. "Real fear is when your house is on fire, or a bomb's coming through your living room."

Patinkin said the "false fear" is when politicians say, "You need to be afraid of refugees, and we have to ban all of these people because they are a threat to our safety."

NBC cited a Cato Institute study from last year that claimed the chance of an American getting killed in a terror attack at the hands of a refugee is 1 in 3.64 billion.

"I will repeat these facts until I have no more breath," Patinkin said.

In a separate interview with USA Today, Patinkin pleaded with world leaders to "stop being afraid" of refugees who are forced to leave war-torn countries.

"I beg the leaders of the world, of the United States, of the European community, to stop being afraid," he said. "Start working together. Listen to the lives of these souls that are no different than your own family, who are desperately in need."
