The family of a Los Angeles man shot dead by police in 2014 settled with the city for $1.5 million more than two years after his death.

Ezell Ford, 25, was shot three times on Aug. 11, 2014 by police after they confronted him on a street near his home. Police said Ford tried to grab a police officer's gun during an ensuing struggle, which led to the shooting.

The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that Ford's family will receive a $1.5 million payout as a result of the killing. The amount was approved by the Los Angeles City Council.

After three officers from the police department's gang unit approached Ford, he refused to comply with their demands to stop and talk with them. One of the officers grabbed Ford's arm, and the man responded by knocking the officer down and going for his gun.

The two other officers shot Ford at close range during the struggle. The officers were not charged in the shooting.

A report last month detailed the large amount of money Los Angeles needed to cover settlement payments, which included $8 million to settle a case involving the shooting death of three people.

L.A. spent all of its annual lawsuit payout budget of $60 million halfway through the current fiscal year, which began last July. The city's Administrative Office needs to borrow money or dip into its reserve fund to cover the remaining settlement payments.
