President Donald Trump is only out to benefit his own business and it appears to be "highly probable" that he violated the law, writes Jill Abramson in a column for The Guardian.

"It's hard to see the legal overreach by Trump as rooted in anything other than the service of his own elevation," the former executive editor of The New York Times writes.

"He is truly the kind of despot that Washington feared could ruin the country."

Abramson took issue with the president for saying "I have the absolute right" to share the information he shared with Russia.

"The president's use of the word shows that he lacks any understanding of the U.S. Constitution…. No one in the United States has absolute power or an absolute right to do anything that violates the Constitution. But apparent violations seem to be occurring almost daily."

The list of Trump's possible offenses keeps growing, but any action against him would require the Republicans to act, Abramson said.

"Even Republicans see the gravity of the unfolding situation," she added.

"Without the enterprise and reporting of The New York Times and Washington Post, we would know nothing about the machinations of the president."

Journalists are "the very people the founders trusted to hold power and to hold those in government accountable," Abramson said.
