Jeff Sessions: Executive Amnesty Would Hurt Border Enforcement

By    |   Tuesday, 11 Nov 2014 09:32 PM

Congress must prevent President Barack Obama from taking executive action to allow millions of illegal immigrants to stay in the country legally, lest it risk weakening border enforcement, Sen. Jeff Sessions said Tuesday on Cumulus Radio's "The Mark Levin Show."

If 5 million to 6 million illegal immigrants receive legal status, what principle can any future law enforcement officer use to enforce any immigration law, the Alabama Republican asked.

Obama has threatened executive action if Congress fails to act. His past history of executive actions has caused conservatives, and even liberal constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley, to say Obama is risking a "constitutional crisis" by stepping on Congress' power.

Though the mainstream media has covered the struggle as a political fight, Sessions said it is actually an attack on governmental structure.

"It's time for us to stand up," Sessions said.

Current funding to run the government expires in December, less than a month before Republicans take control of Congress. Sessions said a continuing resolution should be passed only to keep the government operating until new GOP members can be sworn in.

At that point, Congress should pass a budget that does not fund Obama's planned executive action, thus nullifying it. He said he doesn't think the U.S. people will support Obama if he vetoes the budget, which would shut down the government.

"Congress should not fund an unlawful action by the president," Sessions said, adding that the fight over Obamacare is more complex, but that the "executive amnesty" case is "open and shut."
