Reports: Holmes Referred to Threat Team Six Weeks Before Shooting

Alleged theater gunman James Holmes was referred to his university threat assessment team six weeks before the murderous rampage which killed 12 and an unborn baby, new reports claims.

His psychiatrist, Dr. Lynne Fenton referred his bizarre behavior to the University of Colorado’s team which took no action, Denver’s ABC affiliate, CALL7, reported.

Court documents have already revealed that Holmes, 24, was under Fenton’s care at the time of the July 20 at the Century 16 cinema complex in Aurora, Colo.

The station says the team — known as BETA, the Behavioral Evaluation and Threat Assessment team — did not alert police about Holmes. University Chancellor Don Elliman told the Denver Post, "I believe, until it's been demonstrated otherwise, that our people did what they should have done."

The Post reported that BETA is not a “law enforcement mechanism” but “provides guidance and consultation and may make referrals to appropriate campus or community resources.”

According to the CALL7 report, “Fenton made initial phone calls about engaging the BETA team” in “the first 10 days” of June. But the station says nothing came of it because Holmes began the process of dropping out of school. The alleged killer’s last known appearance on campus was June 10.

Sources told CALL7 that for Fenton to refer the case to BETA, Holmes would have had to have made some specific threat.

“He would have to tell her he had taken steps to make it happen,” an unnamed university source said.

Holmes has been charged with 24 counts of murder — two separate allegations for each victim — and 116 counts of attempted murder, as well as possession of an explosive device and of committing an act of violence. A decision on whether he will face the death penalty has yet to be made.

Authorities say he will not be charged separately with the miscarriage suffered by one of his injured victims.
