Ron Fournier: Hispanics See Obama Executive Order as Pandering

By    |   Wednesday, 19 Nov 2014 08:39 PM

The White House communications staff is "patting themselves on the back" over the timing of President Barack Obama's announcement of his executive order on immigration, says National Journal's Ron Fournier, but it still will be seen as pandering.

"They think they've pulled off some cute little micro-targeting," Fournier said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

Thursday's 8 p.m. announcement will fall in the middle of the Latin Grammy Awards, which plans to pause its proceedings to show Obama. But the major broadcast networks have no plans to show it.

"So the people who are for what he's doing … are going to see him, and the people who are against it aren't," Fournier said.

But, he noted, polls show that while almost 60 percent of the public is for immigration reform, only 38 percent think he should do it by fiat. And only 43 percent of Hispanics think he should use executive powers to pass it.

Hispanics believe they are being pandered to, and could very well stay home during the 2016 elections, handing victories to Republicans again, he said.

"Why, when he had of the control the Congress, why didn’t he give them immigration reform that was durable? Or why not give bipartisan immigration?" he said. "Hispanics know when they’re being pandered to and they’re being used politically, and they can see through this."
