NEW YORK -- Authorities say a fire in a high-rise apartment building in Manhattan sent 45 people to hospitals. Thirty of the injured are firefighters. FDNY Deputy Chief James Daley says two gravely hurt victims may have tried to use an elevator to escape the building. While the flames engulfed just one apartment, the dense, black smoke seeped throughout the entire building. Officials say a third civilian was seriously hurt but expected to survive. All the other injuries are considered minor. Investigators are working to determine what started the three-alarm blaze Thursday evening. It began on the third floor of a 26-story apartment building on the Lower East Side.
