Alaska tops the 2014 list of the happiest states in America, according to an annual Gallup survey.

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index also shows West Virginia in dead-last place for the sixth time in six years.

Over the past seven years, Alaska has ranked in the top 10 four times, according to
research director Dan Witters.

"Alaskans led the nation in 2014 with the lowest levels of daily stress, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol,'" Witters told Business Insider.

"They also make good choices, including the lowest level of drug use in the United States."

Hawaii came in at the No. 2 spot, followed by South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, New Mexico and Texas in the top 10, according to the 2014 ranking.

Populating the bottom 10, along with No. 50 West Virginia, were Missouri, at No. 41, followed by Michigan, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

North Dakota dropped from the first spot in 2013 to the 23rd spot in the 2014 list. Hawaii and Colorado are the only states that have placed in the top 10 every year since 2008, Gallup notes.
