Rep. Kinzinger: Gitmo Should Stay as Long as War on Terror Lasts

Rep. Adam Kinzinger says the detention facility holding terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should be kept open as long the war on terror remains in effect.

President Barack Obama has different ideas. He has been hastening the release of prisoners from the facility in recent months, and said as far back as his 2008 run for the White House that he would shut the facility down altogether.

Kinzinger visited Guantanamo over the weekend, telling Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren," "it kind of blew my expectations away."

Prisoners are treated as well as anyone in a typical American prison, he said, with those who cooperate with guards getting better privileges.

"You go and look at it, and there is no doubt that these people are being treated according to the Geneva Convention, and even beyond that," Kinzinger said. "By the way, they don't deserve Geneva convention protections."

There are two kinds of prisoners, Kinzinger said: those who are very defiant and act out, and those who are peaceful, but manipulative.

"There is no doubt that every one of these people here would kill you if given the opportunity," Kinziner said the guards told him. "And I have very little doubt they would go back on the battlefield."

One of the five Taliban leaders traded for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in May was reported last week to have attempted to do just that, contacting members of the Taliban in Afghanistan from where is currently is living in Qatar.
