Mass. GOP Gov. Demands ACA Consultant Gruber Resignation

By    |   Wednesday, 25 Feb 2015 08:06 PM

Jonathan Gruber, the MIT professor and consultant who said Obamacare became law due to the "stupidity of the American voter," was fired from the board of the Massachusetts health exchange Wednesday.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker demanded — and got — resignations from Gruber and three other members of the state Health Connector board, CBS affiliate WBZ radio first reported.

Gruber became the focus of national controversy last fall when a string of videos emerged showing Gruber boasting about deceptive tactics used in the drafting and marketing of the federal health reform, WBZ notes.

In one video from an October 2013 conference, Gruber admits Obamacare was "written in a tortured way" so the feds wouldn't classify the mandate as taxes, which likely would have killed its political chances.

"Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage," Gruber said in the video.

"Call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to get the thing to pass. I wish ... we could make it all transparent. But I'd rather have this law than not."

Grilled by Congress at a hearing last December, Gruber then apologized for what he called "glib, thoughtless, and sometimes downright insulting" comments.

The Obama administration also distanced itself from the remarks, with Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell saying in November she was "extremely offended by his comments," The Hill reports.

"As a public servant for many years, I have worked on these issues, and I have complete confidence in the American people," she said.

According to The Hill, Republicans in Massachusetts had been calling on Gruber to be removed from the board, but he remained until Baker took office last month. The Massachusetts health exchange was plagued by problems last year, much as the federally-run marketplaces were.
