Legendary athlete Gordie, known affectionately as "Mr. Hockey," died Friday morning in Ohio, according to multiple reports. He was 88.

Howe played more than 1,700 games, scoring 801 goals during an NHL career that spanned four decades. He won four Stanley Cup titles with the Red Wings and earned the NHL's most valuable player award six times. He spent 25 years with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Hall of Famer held the NHL's goal-scoring record during his time with Detroit between 1946 and 1971 until Wayne Gretzky broke his record.

Howe retired at the age of 51 after playing for the Hartford Whalers in the 1979-80 season.

Howe underwent stem cell treatment in 2015.
