A third House Republican has signed on as a co-sponsor of a bill to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that gives states the right to disregard same-sex marriages performed in other states, advocacy group Freedom to Marry announced.

Illinois Republican Rep. Robert Dold declared the Respect for Marriage bill "an important step toward ensuring that the federal government upholds its obligation to afford equal protection for all Americans," according to a statement.

He joins fellow GOP co-sponsors Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida and Richard Hanna of New York — the only Republicans among some 126 co-sponsors, the Huffington Post reports.

The Senate version has no Republican co-sponsors, the Huffington Post reports.

"Washington should no longer stand in the way of loving unions between two people that have already been legally recognized in states like the one I represent," Dold said.

The Supreme Court in 2013 struck down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act, but since the rest of the law remains intact, states still don't have to recognize same-sex marriages performed legally in other states.

The Respect for Marriage bill, introduced Jan. 6, would repeal DOMA in its entirety.

There are currently 36 states, and the District of Columbia, in which gay marriage is legal. The Supreme Court is to decide by late June whether same-sex couples have the right under the Constitution to marry regardless of which state they live in.

Evan Wolfson, president and founder of Freedom to Marry, applauded Dold for joining co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage bill.

"The growth of support among Republicans for the freedom to marry shows that America is, indeed, ready to turn the page on past discrimination and that it is time for the Supreme Court to bring the country to national resolution," Wolfson said in a statement.

"Congressman Dold is doing the right thing for his party, as well as for families and the American people."
