Website Founder: GOP Can Reach Hispanics Through 'Family'

Clara del Villar, founder and editor-in-chief of HispanicPost.com, tells Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview that there are “without question” more Republican Hispanics than typically thought and the way to reach the them is “with the family.”

“They have strong conservative beliefs, they have strong family units, and they have enormous opportunity interest in the United States,” she said. “The way to communicate a view in this community, that actually George W. Bush did very effectively, was to premise every policy idea with the family and how it impacts your family, number one.”

According to Villar, the hispanic community is very business minded and has a strong connection to the private sector, another source for their conservative values.

“The Department of Labor came out with a study early last year that showed 8 out of 10 Hispanics in the United States work in the private sector,” she said. “Another survey indicated that 8 out of 10 profoundly prefer to work in the private sector than the public sector.”

President Barack Obama carried the Hispanic vote at 71 percent in 2012, the highest level by a Democratic candidate since President Bill Clinton won the Hispanic vote by 72 percent. That is a 44 percent advantage over Republican Mitt Romney. In comparison, Democrat John Kerry carried the Hispanic vote by 18 percentage points over President George W. Bush in 2004, according to the Pew Research Center.

When asked how Republicans can win back this key demographic, Villar says: “What you have to have is an intelligent and sensitive conversation with a community that really has come from very authoritarian governments or very impoverished nations and deal with this community understanding the hardships they’ve gone through and have a reasonable debate.

“They want law and order so they understand the issues of illegal immigration.”

Villar also mentions tactical mistakes that the GOP made when trying to reach the Hispanic voters during the 2012 election.

“We didn’t use digital [communication] to the innovative and effective way the Obama administration did,” she said. “The Republicans did not engage on Univision and the Spanish language networks to the degree that was critical to communicate the message on a broad-based level.”

As for the upcoming immigration reforms being proposed in Washington, Villar says: “If you talk about the path to citizenship, even if you do everything right, you’re still talking about a 12 year process. . . . [It] is not the rosy, easy path that’s mean to be communicated by the Democrats.”

Villar started the HispanicPost.com website about 18 months ago as a conservative online news source aimed at helping hispanics learn how to successfully use the technological tools that are available to them to help expand their businesses.

“This community engages technology and digital and social engagement to a level on par or exceeding the U.S. population,” she said. “So when they get on the web, they search for news and ideas and communicate on the web profoundly, that includes social media.”
