ELIZABETH, N.J. -- The nation's first openly gay governor has begun testifying in his divorce case, saying he proposed writing a book with his estranged wife, but she turned him down and later wrote her own memoir. On the stand Wednesday, former New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey said he was originally offered $1 million to write his life story, but later signed a book contract for far less. McGreevey is in a high-profile divorce battle with wife Dina Matos McGreevey. They are battling over alimony, child support and the division of assets and liabilities. He was quizzed extensively about his jobs and salaries. More testimony was expected later in the day. He resigned from office in 2004, after saying he had an affair with a male staffer. The staffer denies that.
