In his continued social media campaign against same-sex marriage, evangelist Franklin Graham castigates Ireland for its recent decision to legalize it.

"It's hard to believe that the once staunchly religious country of Ireland has become the first country in the world to legalize same sex marriage by popular vote," Graham posted on his Facebook page Thursday morning.

"According to an Irish gay Cabinet minister, '[The vote] makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world, of liberty and equality.' They must not realize that this is a light shining in the wrong direction! Jesus Christ said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12).' Let's pray that the upcoming Supreme Court vote here in our own country will uphold the Biblical definition of marriage — between one man and one woman."

By early Thursday afternoon, Graham’s post had received some 40,000 "Likes," had been shared 8,000 times and been commented on by nearly 3,500 people.

"This Scotsman-IRISH Thorobred is Disgusted!!!" read one. "Jesus I Love you-come soon!!!"

Others simply posted an "Amen" or a prayer for the Supreme Court justices, something Graham has solicited daily from his followers, 1.5 million on Facebook and 274,000 on Twitter, numbers that have increased during his crusade opposing gay marriage.

As the high court prepares to rule on whether state bans on same-sex marriage are constitutional — a decision expected in June — Graham is asking his followers to offer up prayers for each of the nine justices.

"God hears our prayers, and we need to pray that He will work mightily in the hearts and minds of our Supreme Court justices right now as they consider this monumental issue," he posted on May 11.

Most recently, on May 20, Graham requested prayers for Justice Clarence Thomas, who he lauded as a "wise jurist and consistent defender of the Constitution" who has voted in the past to "uphold the biblical definition of marriage and has indicated that he does not believe there is a Constitutional right to same-sex marriage."

Graham asked his followers to pray that Thomas would "continue to stand as a voice of truth and wisdom in the face of vehement opposition from gay rights advocates."

The son of the Rev. Billy Graham, Franklin Graham is a vocal opponent of same-sex unions. The Christian publication Charisma News reported in March that Graham took to Facebook to rebuke the U.S. Presbyterian Church’s decision to change the wording of its constitution to include same-sex marriage.

"In His Word, the Bible, God has already defined marriage, as well as sin, and we should obey that rather than looking for ways to redefine it according to the desires of our culture. Marriage is defined as between a man and a woman — end of discussion. Anything else is a sin against God, and He will judge all sin one day."
