Florida Is Leader in Private Health Insurance Sign-Ups

Florida has the highest number of citizens enrolled in private Obamacare healthcare plans, even though it is strongly opposed by the Republican officials in the Sunshine State.

By mid-January, Florida had 1.27 million individuals signed up for private health insurance plans, NPR is reporting.

"It's surprising Florida has done as well compared to other states, and they will be looked at by folks who want to learn lessons to promote enrollment," said Joel Ario of Manatt Health Solutions, which is a consulting firm that worked with the Obama administration on setting up the exchanges.

Florida has even surpassed California in enrollment, even though the Golden State has double the population, has three times the federal funding dedicated to outreach and has its own Obamacare marketplace.

By contrast, California has 1.2 million individuals enrolled in private healthcare plans through either Covered California or from health insurance brokers.

There are 919,000 Texans enrolled in private healthcare plans in the Lone Star State even though Texas has 6 million more people than Florida. Both states have the same percentage of the population which is reportedly uninsured — 22 percent. In California, 17 percent of the population is uninsured.

Leah Barber-Heinz, of Florida CHAIN, a group advocating for Obamacare cites the "commitment on the part of many and . . . an extremely high need for affordable coverage."

But according to NPR, there are other reasons cited by experts such as high competition between insurers and a lot of coordination between nonprofit and community groups, which were given federal funds to help get Floridians signed up.

The Sunshine State also opted not to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, which means that Floridians above the federal poverty level only have the option of buying private health insurance through the healthcare exchange with the help of government funded subsidies.

By comparison, Medicaid was expanded in California and its program Medi-Cal added 2.3 million people since the fall of 2013.
