The rate of divorce among female service members increased from 6.2 percent in 2015 to 6.6 percent in 2016, according to Military.com.

The rate of male service members getting divorces remained static, at 2.6 percent, with no change since 2013, the website noted, citing figures from the Defense Manpower Data Centersurvey.

The divorce rate overall is 3.1 percent, up from 3 percent in 2015. Until this year, the rate had been in decline since 2011, according to a Military.com's 2016 analysis.

The Marine Corps is seeing the highest rate among all the services, with the rates for both men and women on the rise.

  • Male Marines: 2.8 percent, up from 2.3 percent.
  • Female Marines: 7.7 percent, up from 6.4 percent.
  • Among enlisted soldiers, the difference is greater:
  • Male enlisted soldiers who divorced: 2.8 percent.
  • Female enlisted soldiers who divorced: 8 percent.

"For the men, it's quite stable," Benjamin Karney, a RAND Corp. researcher who has studied divorces in the military, told Military.com. "But for women, this wasn't a great year. You see a notable increase in every active-duty service, and you see the end of what had been a yearly decline in the Army."

Comparing the divorce rate in the military to the divorce rate among the general U.S. population is difficult, because the numbers are calculated differently, Military.com notes.

The total U.S. divorce rate is based on every 1,000 residents, and does not include five states, one of which is California.
