Family Research Council Chief of Staff Faces Huge Challenges

By    |   Friday, 01 May 2015 12:08 PM

The Family Research Council, a powerful voice for conservative Christians and traditional values, hired Shannon Royce as its first chief of staff and chief operating officer last month, and she is plunging right in to her duties overseeing the FRC's 85-member staff.

The organization's mission is "to advance faith, family, and freedom in public policy and the culture from a Christian worldview" at a very challenging time.

The Supreme Court is considering whether to declare homosexual marriage a constitutional right that should be expanded across the United States, and a growing number of devout Christians are discussing the possibility of engaging in acts of civil disobedience if the high court makes that decision.

Royce, 55, daughter of a Southern Baptist preacher, has worked at Concerned Women for America in San Diego and Washington. She attended law school and worked for several U.S. senators before eventually becoming director of government relations and legislative counsel for the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.

Royce, who is married with two sons, began working with the FRC as a contractor on issues related to religious freedom in the military several years ago. Recently, FRC President Tony Perkins offered her the chief of staff position, and she gladly accepted.

"I don't think anyone could have seen 25 years ago how bad things have gotten today," Royce told the National Journal.

Asked by the National Journal to explain, Royce mentioned the organization's opposition to gay marriage in terms of protecting religious freedom.

"If marriage is redefined, we'll see even more of a religious-liberty crisis in this country," she said. "There's a lot of conversation about living in a tolerant society ... But unfortunately, for it to work in a civil society, you have to have tolerance both ways."
