The Pentagon's F-35A jet, part of the Air Force's fleet of fighters, will make its maiden overseas deployment to Europe this weekend.

According to Defense News, the Department of Defense said the technologically advanced fighter will deploy from the 388th Fighter Wing at Utah's Hill Air Force Base to an undisclosed European location for training exercises with NATO allies.

"This training deployment signifies an important milestone and natural progression of the F-35 program, allowing the Air Force to further demonstrate the operational capabilities of the fifth generation fighter aircraft," the Pentagon said, reports Defense News.

"It also assists in refining requirements for eventually basing the F-35A in Europe, which is scheduled to receive the aircraft in the early 2020s."

The deployment is expected to last several weeks, and the jets will be part of a U.S. program called the European Reassurance Initiative — a joint effort with America's European allies that pushes back against Russia's aggression in Europe.

There are three variants of the F-35: the A, B, and C. The Air Force employs the F-35A, a conventional takeoff and landing jet that is made for operating from air bases as opposed to aircraft carriers.

President Donald Trump criticized the costly F-35 program during his transition late last year, which resulted in a savings of $728 million for the Pentagon's latest batch of the jets made by Lockheed Martin.

The Marine Corps deployed F-35B jets for the first time in March. The fighter that boasts short takeoff and vertical landing features was sent to South Korea for training.
