A top New York University journalism professor says reporting in the age of President Donald Trump – who has dubbed the press the "enemy of the American people" -- is actually "a very exciting time" for those in the media business.

"I don't think Trump has made this a bad time to be a journalist. In some ways it is a very exciting time to be a journalist," Mitchell Stephens told The Washington Square News.

"You know it is a scary time in the context of the country, it is a scary time to be a citizen in this country when you have the president attacking, for what appears to be such outlandish reasons, some of our better news organs."

Stephens also said it's ironic that as Trump trashes national media outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN, their readership and viewership is increasing.

Stephens is the author of the upcoming book "The Voice of America: Lowell Thomas and the Invention of 20th-Century Journalism," to be published in June by St. Martin’s Press.
