Senator Says Ebola Situation Improving in Liberia

Sunday, 04 Jan 2015 03:50 PM

A Democrat senator back from a trip to Liberia says the Ebola epidemic there has dwindled "to a few embers."

Delaware Sen. Chris Coons says now that the crisis is being managed, the U.S. needs a new strategy. Coons says the idea is to help Liberians take control of the infrastructure U.S. troops stationed in the region have helped build. Coons says the roughly 2,400 U.S. troops dispatched to the region have done a great job of improving Liberia's ability to deal with Ebola.

Speaking Sunday on CBS's Face the Nation, Coons said he will soon send a memo to President Barack Obama and Department of Defense calling for a change in strategy.

Coons says he's also being monitored for symptoms of Ebola, just in case.
