New York real estate heir Robert Durst is set to change his plea to a federal weapons charge in New Orleans, a move his lawyer said may allow him to stand trial in Los Angeles over the 2000 murder of his friend.

Durst was arrested in New Orleans on March 14, the day before HBO showed the final episode of “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” in which he is heard talking to himself while in a bathroom and still wearing a microphone. “Killed them all,” he said, apparently in reference to his first wife, his Los Angeles friend Susan Berman, and a man in Galveston, Texas.

Durst’s extradition to California, where Los Angeles prosecutors have charged him with Berman’s murder, has been held up by the weapons case in Louisiana. He was arrested in March and pleaded not guilty to a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. His change of plea hearing is scheduled for Dec. 17.

“Bob Durst did not kill Susan Berman and doesn’t know who did,” his attorney, Dick DeGuerin of Houston, said in an e- mailed statement Monday. “From the time of his arrest in New Orleans in March, Bob and his legal team have been eager to get to California so he will finally have the opportunity to prove his innocence. We hope to resolve all other charges right away so that Bob can be transferred to California for trial.”

The lawyer helped Durst beat murder charges in Texas 12 years ago after the real estate heir admitted to a jury that he had cut up his neighbor and dumped the body parts in Galveston Bay.
