Forty-five percent of Americans say they have tried marijuana at least once, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday, a new high since the question was first asked in 1969.

In that initial survey on the subject, only four percent of Americans said they had ever tried marijuana.

The increase in use over the past five decades comes as recreational marijuana use is now allowed in eight states, which comprises 20 percent of the U.S. population.

The poll also shows:

  • 51 percent of those in the 30-to-49 age range have tried the drug, the highest rate of any age group, followed closely by those aged 50 to 64 at 49 percent.
  • Only 23 percent of those 65 and older say they have tried marijuana, while 38 percent of those between 18 and 29 have done so.
  • Among men, 48 percent of Americans have tried it, while only 35 percent of women have done so.
  • 12 percent of Americans say they currently smoke marijuana, nearly double the percentage since Gallup first asked the question in 2013, although the rise has only been slight in the past three years.
  • 18 percent of those aged 18 to 29 say they currently smoke marijuana.
  • Among men, 13 percent say they currently smoke marijuana, while among women it is 7 percent.
  • 60 percent of Americans say marijuana should be legal, an all-time high.
  • 17 percent of Americans say they currently smoke cigarettes.

Results for the poll are based on telephone interviews conducted July 5-9, with a random sample of 1,021 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

The two questions are based on half samples of approximately 500 adults each. For results based on these samples of national adults, the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 5 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
