Prominent Democratic operative and commentator Donna Brazile says President George W. Bush "got it right" in his response to Hurricane Katrina, defending him from critics who've included President Barack Obama.

The staunch support from Donna Brazile, who managed Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign and briefly served as the acting chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee in 2011, came as she flew aboard Air Force One with the president to New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of the devastating hurricane, the Blaze reports.

"I’m one of those individuals that believes that under President Bush’s leadership, we got it right," said the Louisiana native, the Blaze reports. "It was slow. Remember, the state and local government was overwhelmed. The federal government had to step in. The federal government had to figure out its role."

"It took a while for the federal government to really figure out how to help us, and I think once the president made the decision that New Orleans would be rebuild, despite some of the conversation on Capitol Hill that didn’t believe that the federal government should invest hundreds of billions of dollars into the recovery effort, the president made a commitment and I think he kept his word," she said.

She also hailed former first lady Laura Bush for her commitment to rebuild the city’s libraries.

Walter Isaacson, the Aspen Institute CEO who served with Brazile on the Louisiana Recovery Authority, agreed, The Hill reports.

"George W. Bush, I think, gets a bum rap," he told reporters on Air Force One, The Hill reports. "It took a while to get things started, it was a little bit slow. But he cared about the city deeply and so did Laura Bush."

The administration's response to Katrina in 2005 is seen as one of the low points of Bush's presidency.

"What started out as a natural disaster became a manmade one — a failure of government to look out for its own citizens," Obama's speech in New Orleans charges.
