Democratic lawmakers suffered a setback this week as the Department of Justice said it will pass along its complaints about alleged wrongdoing by ExxonMobil to the FBI, The Daily Caller reports.

Passing the buck — the DOJ said it was performing a "courtesy" — adds a new layer of red tape to the request, which could delay an immediate response.

Environmentalists want Exxon prosecuted for funding groups that doubt man-made global warming.

The FBI will now determine whether ExxonMobil officials knew about the alleged effects of global warming on sea levels and if an investigation should be launched, The Caller said.
