Study: Doctors Shifting Alliance to Democrats

Doctors in America have shifted their political allegiances from Republicans to Democrats over the last two decades, a new study has found.

According to The New York Times, the research looked at the federal campaign giving of roughly 140,000 doctors from 1991 through 2012, and found a steady decline of donations to Republicans to less than half, but for the exception of the 2010 election cycle.

The study conducted by Adam Bonica of Stanford University, Howard Rosenthal of New York University, and David Rothman of Columbia University, also found that physicians' partisanship increased during that period, with just 3 percent of doctors splitting their contributions between the two major parties during the 2012 cycle, down from 5.9 percent in 1992.

The changes in party loyalty were attributed to a shift in demographics among doctors. During that period studied, there was an increase in female doctors and a decrease in the number of doctors who were self-employed or part of small practices.

The authors believe demographic shifts will continue to change donation habits in the coming years.
"At present, all that is certain is that in political terms, the profession is in play," the authors said, according to the Times.

The study also found an overall increase in the number of doctors contributing to federal campaigns as well as the amounts given, the Times reported, though giving was not consistent and tended to focus around presidential election years.

Almost one in 10 physicians made a contribution during the 2012 election, amounting to a record total of $143 million.
