TV actress Debra Messing apologized for her social media post advocating gun control during a shooting incident at UCLA.

The actress posted a "selfie" of herself wearing an orange T-shirt on June 1 in support of Katie Couric's gun safety documentary, according to the New York Daily News.

Messing, the star of the sitcom "Will and Grace" and the drama "Mysteries of Laura," tweeted her apology:

UCLA was on lock-down for most of the day in response to the murder-suicide on campus, according to CNN, when Messing posted the picture.

Many users tweeted their criticism of Messing's post:

The documentary Messing was supporting has itself been the subject of controversy. In "Under the Gun," gun rights activists appear to take a long time to answer a question Couric asks about background checks. In the documentary, eight seconds elapse before the activists answer.

However, audio recordings show that the activists answered the host immediately. Couric issued an apology, and said the documentary's director put in the space for "dramatic effect."
