Dean G. Skelos, Republican majority leader of the New York state Senate, and his son Adam are the focus of a federal grand jury investigation, The New York Times reports.

The probe is focusing on Adam Skelos' business dealings, according to the Times, including his hiring by Arizona company AbTech Industries and a stormwater treatment contract awarded to the company even though it wasn't the low bidder.

The investigation is also reportedly is looking at a $20,000 payment Adam Skelos received from a title insurance company for which he was never employed.

The investigation, by federal prosecutors and the FBI, is looking into whether the senator used his influence to benefit AbTech and another firm, Glenwood Management, in exchange for AbTech hiring his son as a consultant.

The Times says neither the senator nor his son has been accused of wrongdoing, but prosecutors are starting to offer evidence to a grand jury.

Neither Dean Skelos nor his son responded to questions from the Times, but Adam Skelos told a reporter outside his home that "I had no idea that this was even an issue," and called the probe "unexpected."

The investigation follows the arrest earlier this year of New York Democratic Assemblyman Sheldon Silver of Manhattan, who resigned as speaker.
