David Koch Signs On to Court Brief Supporting Gay Marriage

By    |   Tuesday, 03 Mar 2015 07:27 PM

Wealthy businessman, philanthropist and GOP donor David Koch is backing a federal challenge to same sex marriage bans, signing on to a Supreme Court brief urging the court to overturn state-level prohibitions, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

Koch,  the vice president of Koch Industries and the world’s sixth wealthiest person, declared his belief in gay marriage in 2012. His supports puts him among other high-profile, right-leaning figures asking the Supreme Court to prohibit states from outlawing the practice, the Free Beacon reports.

Koch Industries general counsel Mark Holden said Koch signed his name to the brief in his personal capacity, the Free Beacon reports.

Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin reports Tuesday "an impressive array of Republicans" also are filing an amicus brief Friday supporting gay marriage in the high court's consideration of the DeBoer v. Snyder case.

Those signing the brief, Rubin reports, include former Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman, conservative pundits S.E. Cupp and Alex Castellanos, former White House chief of staff Ken Duberstein, former Mitt Romney senior advisers Beth Myers and Carl Forti, conservative economists Doug Holtz-Eakin,  formerly director of the Congressional Budget Office – and Greg Mankiw,  formerly on the Council of Economic Advisers,  former Wyoming Republican Sen. Alan Simpson, former homeland security adviser Fran Townsend and former Massachusetts state Senate minority leader Richard Tisei.

"I think the diversity of the people is a reflection of what we have seen which is increased support in every demographic [for gay marriage]," Mehlman told The Post.
