CNN has a new political contributor, Dan Pfeiffer, who has worked as a longtime aide to President Barack Obama.

CNN announced Monday that Pfeiffer, 39, is joining the network.

"He served in a host of communications roles during the campaign, the transition and then the White House, becoming communications director for much of Obama's first term and then being promoted to senior adviser for the first two years of the second term," CNN wrote in its announcement.

"He left his post as the White House's senior adviser for strategy and communications in March as one of Obama's longest-tenured strategists," the network wrote.

According to The Hill, Pfeiffer has been a key player in moving the Obama administration to take an active role in new media, including the appearances Obama has made on YouTube, BuzzFeed and Vice.

Former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney also joined CNN as a political commentator after leaving the Obama administration.

In his first role as political contributor for CNN, Pfeiffer penned an opinion piece on why the Democratic Party needs a real primary.
