The Dallas Morning News in a scathing editorial tears into the slates of both Republican and Democratic presidential candidates, accusing them of playing "duck and hide" on the issue of immigration reform.

"The American voter hoping for sound and reasonable immigration policy from a presidential candidate must settle so far for sound bites," the editorial kicks off.

It quotes Donald Trump: "I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words."

And it quotes Ted Cruz: "We will build a wall that works ... and I'll get Donald Trump to pay for it."

"That they are No. 1 and 1a in Republican polling just days from the first voting in Iowa is no cause for celebration," the editorial says.

"Neither is what's happening on the Democratic side, as the top three suitors to succeed President Barack Obama join advocacy groups in harsh criticism of his administration's attempts to enforce the law."

It says the candidates keep trying to "skirt" needed changes.

"Our hope was that this election might push candidates toward solutions, not sophistry. And we all keep paying for that," the newspaper says.
