Chris Christie: No Secret 'I'm a Cowboys Fan'

Tuesday, 16 Dec 2014 12:31 PM

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is defending his loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys after he was criticized by a lawmaker for supporting a football team that does not play home games in the Garden State.

"I’m a Cowboys fan," the Republican governor said on the monthly "Ask the Governor" program on New Jersey’s 101.5, according to Politico. "This is the worst kept secret in America; I’ve been talking about this five years."

The Republican governor, who was seated next to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Sunday during the team’s 38-27 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, was hitting back at tweets by a Philadelphia city councilman who slammed Christie’s allegiance to the Texas team.

"I’m a Cowboys fan and I’m sitting with the owner of the Cowboys and the Cowboys score a touchdown, what am I supposed the do? The Mount Rushmore routine and stare straight ahead? You can bet your life I’m high-fiving Jerry Jones."

Referring to the Eagles stadium, Lincoln Financial Field, Councilman James Kenney said: "Chris Christie is sitting on his very fat ass next to Jerry Jones in his box at the Linc. You suck! Kissing Texas ass for 2016! Awful!"

When asked about Kenney’s comments, Christie replied: "Listen, I’m not going to get into it. First of all, who?"

"I don’t even know who this guy is. But listen, there’s lots of people who attempt to use me to increase their own fame. He’s got to get somebody else beside his parents to know who he is, so that’s good."

The governor said that he’s supported the Cowboys since he was 9-years-old and that he refuses to do this "namby pamby crap" of hiding his love for the team.

He’s a Cowboys fan even though he’s the chief executive for a state with ties to both the New York Giants and Jets, which are based in the Meadowlands in northern New Jersey, and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Christie revealed that Eagles fans had said "all kinds of things at me when I was in the box with Jerry." But he didn’t fight back "because that would be wrong."

He also said that President Barack Obama had joked about his "adventures in Philadelphia," during his visit to New Jersey on Monday.
