Rep. Gohmert: I No Longer Have Health Insurance Due to Obamacare

The first member of Congress without healthcare insurance because of Obamacare could be Rep. Louie Gohmert, who said Thursday he no longer has health coverage because of the new law.

"The problem is that when Obamacare actually kicked in, just as we knew, if you liked your insurance, as I did — I had a health savings account — I wasn't going to be able to keep it, because it doesn't meet the requirements," the Texas Republican told "Fox & Friends."

Story continues below video.

Gohmert explained that though his daughters were grown, his old policy didn't include maternity care, and the law required him to have maternity coverage, if it was to be a "legitimate policy." He said the annual deductibles for his health insurance would have doubled from $3,000 to $6,000, and his monthly premiums would have risen from $300 to $1,200 per month.

"That's where we are. I don't have an extra $1,200 a month. And, we are setting money aside in the event we need it," he said.

Gohmert said his focus is on paying off his daughters' college loans. He emphasized that 40 years ago, hardly anyone had health insurance, and called for reform to the country's healthcare system.
