Texas Lawmaker to States: Join Us in Openly Celebrating Christmas

Friday, 12 Dec 2014 12:25 PM

A Texas lawmaker is urging more states to pass a religious freedom bill similar to the Merry Christmas Law in Texas that allows teachers and students to openly celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah at school without retribution.

Houston state Rep. Dwayne Bohac told Breitbart that Missouri and Tennessee have already approved similar legislation to the one enacted by the Lone Star State last year, while eight other states have had comparable religious freedom bills put forward in their legislatures.

"It's the first anniversary of Texas' bill," said Bohac, who helped to push the legislation. "We want to get a national debate going and inspire other states to pass their own versions of the Merry Christmas bill."

Bohac told the political news website that he backed the bill after he became concerned that the American Civil Liberties Union was behind several lawsuits stemming from teachers celebrating religious holidays in schools.

"Texas has a history of school districts landing in lawsuits for teachers handing out candy canes or writing Christmas expressions on military cards going overseas," he said.

"I have also heard from teachers saying that the school district had told them not to use red and green colors at parties. Some were even told not to put pictures of Santa Claus in the classroom because they could be construed in some way as state-sponsored religion."

Bohac, who was written a book called "Merry Christmas Y’all" due to be published next year, continued, "We don't need this crazy political correctness running amok during the holiday season where teachers and administrators can land in hot water for merely calling a holiday by its name.

"It's nuts that our culture has come to this, but this is where we are and we have to push back against this anti-religious freedom and do something about it."
