Chicago Mayor Repays City for Travel Costs After Probe

Thursday, 04 Sep 2014 12:50 PM

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has paid back $14,000 to the city after an investigation into his travel expenses, The New York Times reported.

The probe by The Chicago Tribune into the Democratic mayor’s public schedule and campaign disclosures found that he had billed the city for "expensive airline tickets" and "luxury hotels" while he was fundraising or traveling for events not related to his job.

Emanuel took 50 flights around the country during his first 30 months in office while combining city business with politics and attending events to help burnish his national image, according to the Tribune.

Emanuel, President Barack Obama’s former chief of staff, has been considering joining the race to become the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, according to reports.

At taxpayers’ expense, Rahm even splashed out $1,800 for one night in a Washington hotel room while he was in town for Obama’s second inauguration, the Tribune said.

Emanuel’s repayment, including interest, was the outcome of a new city policy to prevent Chicago taxpayers from footing the bill for fundraising trips by city officials.

The policy says that mayoral travel for campaign purposes should not be funded by the city, and that if a trip combines mayoral duties and fundraising, Chicago taxpayers should have to pay only for the part of the trip related to city business.

"Mayor Emanuel has been committed to ensuring transparency throughout his administration," Adam Collins, the mayor’s spokesman, told the Times. "We implemented this policy to address how travel expenditures are allocated and to ensure a clear process and full transparency. We determined to apply the policy retroactively, reimbursing the city with interest for any expenditures that fell under that new policy."
