"Troublemakers" such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are holding black people back more than "rogue" police officers, says Fox Business Network host Charles Payne.

Appearing Tuesday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," Payne said Sharpton visited a church he sometimes attends in Harlem, where Sharpton called out black conservatives as being cowards.

"I was so offended," Payne said. "I feel like I'm a warrior. I get up every single morning before the sun gets up and I go out there and I work hard. You can't tell a black person like that they're a coward. But that's the message that's held us back a lot more than an occasional rogue policeman — or rogue wannabe policeman."

As Ferguson, Missouri, prepares for possible protests in the wake of an announcement on whether police officer Darren Wilson will be indicted for shooting unarmed black man Michael Brown, 18, in August, Payne called for calm.

He said he hopes the situation galvanizes the community, because a month from now the "troublemakers" will have moved on to the next hotspot and Ferguson will have become just a footnote in history unless the people who live there find ways to make it better.

"The people of Ferguson want to be accepted by America, or feel accepted by America," Payne said. "And it's others who are telling them you will never be, and this is just another example of them hating you."

The black community should stop to think about how far it has come and not just how far it still has to go, he said.

"It's like running a 26-mile marathon and being worried about the last 3 miles," he said.

Payne said a lot of the problems in Ferguson and other minority areas will go away when the economy is better and people feel there are more opportunities.

"A lot of this goes away if there weren't professional troublemakers always stirring the pot," he added.
