Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) said that her son, who has Down syndrome, is one of the reasons she voted for the Republican healthcare bill, the American Health Care Act.

"It's the people we love—our children, friends, and neighbors—who are the inspiration behind our American Health Care Act," Rodgers said in a Thursday opinion piece in The Washington Post.

She said Republicans are not looking to remove protections for those with preexisting conditions. "We're working hard to build a health-care system that puts the American people back at the center of their health decisions," she said in The Post.

The new bill returns control over health care to states, "through both funding and reducing red tape, which empowers them to innovate and to stabilize costs," the congresswoman added.

Maine, with its "invisible" high-risk pool, as an example of a state with a workable health care solution, Rodgers said in the Post piece. Maine cut premiums in half while guaranteeing access for those with preexisting conditions, according to Health Affairs Blog.

"Protecting people with preexisting conditions isn't just good policy — it's a personal mission," she said.

Americans for Tax Reform also praised the bill, saying that it cuts taxes on Americans by over $1 trillion.
