The Sons of the American Revolution honored the two U.S. Capitol Police officers wounded during a shootout last month that left a lawmaker and several others hospitalized.

Officer Crystal Griner and Special Agent David Bailey were part of a three-person Capitol Police detail protecting House Minority Whip Steve Scalise on June 14 when Scalise and several other Republican senators and congressman were at a baseball practice. A lone gunman began shooting at people in the field, prompting Griner, Bailey, and officer Henry Cabrera to leap into action.

Scalise was shot and has underwent several surgeries. A congressional aide and a lobbyist were also shot.

Griner was shot in the ankle and Bailey suffered an injury not caused by a gunshot as they rushed toward the field to engage the shooter, who later died at the hospital. Both were honored for their bravery and heroism on July 4 in Washington, D.C.

"It is with a great deal of honor that the DC SAR presents you both with our law enforcement commendation medal for your heroic actions," Sons of the American Revolution president Brock Bierman said, WTOP reports.

Bailey accepted both awards, as Griner is still recovering from her injury.

"I'm greatly honored to be here. Thank you for the award and, just thank you, appreciate it," Bailey said.

Cabrera took up position behind the first base dugout at the field in Alexandria, Va. and engaged the shooter during the incident. Officers from the Alexandria Police Department arrived on scene within minutes and also fired back.
