California Community Colleges, the largest unified education system in the country, has vowed it will resist any attempt by the federal government to deport illegal immigrants within its student body.

In a statement of principles, the colleges joined the University of California and California State University by declaring they would do everything legally possible to prevent deportation efforts by the President-elect Donald Trump administration, which has promised to make a crackdown on illegal immigration a priority.

They also insisted the new administration preserve the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which permits children of undocumented immigrants to study at institutes of higher education in the United States.

"It is vital that these students, who were brought to this country as children, have the ability to learn without fear of being deported," the statement declared. "The California Community Colleges stand with these students because they represent some of the best qualities that our state and nation have to offer."

Among the steps the California Community Colleges said it would take included the refusal to release any personally identifiable student information, including immigration status, without a judicial warrant, subpoena or court order, and to refuse to cooperate with any federal effort to create a registry of individuals based on any protected characteristics such as religion or national origin.

Thousands of students nationwide have held protests demanding universities declare themselves "sanctuary campuses" in order to protect illegal immigrants from deportation, The Daily Caller reported.

Although other institutes of higher learning have taken similar action, the California colleges have been by far the most important due to their large size and the much higher number of illegal immigrants studying there than in the average U.S. university.
