DALLAS -- Southern Methodist University's selection as the site of George W. Bush's presidential library is nearly official, after more than a year as the lone finalist, a spokesman said Thursday. SMU trustees vote Friday on the final agreement with the Bush Foundation, and the official announcement is expected later that day, said Taylor Griffin, a spokesman for the library site selection committee. The 11,000-student, Methodist-affiliated university has been the only candidate for 14 months. It is first lady Laura Bush's alma mater and both Bushes are Methodist. The library, a museum and a public policy institute are planned. Some faculty members fought the project because of concerns the policy institute would further the Bush administration's views to the detriment of the school. Some Methodist ministers opposed the project, but a church council approved leasing the land for the site last spring. ___ On the Net: Southern Methodist University:
