For Some Border Patrol Jobs, Men Need Not Apply

In response to a surge of women and children crossing the border illegally, the U.S. government has embarked on a new initiative aimed at recruiting women to serve as U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

Leslie Lawson, the agent in charge of the Nogales, Arizona, U.S. Border Patrol station, told The Wall Street Journal that the agency wants its workforce to be more diverse and better equipped to handle the border crossers it encounters.

Close to 121,000 women triple the number from three years ago crossed the border during fiscal year 2014, which ended Sept. 30.

About 5 percent of the Border Patrol’s 21,000 members are female.

Lawson, who oversees 700 agents, said her agency encounters many female trauma victims, and that many of them are likely to be more comfortable with female agents.

Last summer, the agency Customs and Border Protection was overwhelmed by a surge in unaccompanied minors and women with children who illegally crossed the border and turned themselves in to U.S. authorities. Most were from Central America, and many of them "were released with the expectation that they would report back to immigration officials within 15 days," The Associated Press reported.

Shevannah Wray, spokeswoman for the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, told the AP that the search for more female agents comes down to one thing: the need "to diversify our workforce and to make it reflect the workforce of the whole United States."
