Rep. Bobby Rush: Black Moms Control Kids Amid Baltimore Violence

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Apr 2015 10:40 AM

Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush stepped up on the House floor Monday to make a plea to black mothers across the country to urge them to take control of their children — much like a Baltimore mother who openly chastised her son for taking part in the city's ongoing riots, The Hill reported.

"I would like to make a special appeal to African-American mothers across this country. That they begin to use their awesome powers to take back our streets from the daily violence that far too many of our youth, far too many of our families, and far too many of our communities are experiencing each and every day," Rush, who serves on the Congressional Black Caucus, told his fellow lawmakers, The Hill said.

He made his remarks alongside a large blown-up photograph showing Baltimore mom Toya Graham slapping her hoodie-wearing son — an image that went viral after footage of her admonition was shown by several television networks, including CNN.

Graham, in an interview with CBS News, said she didn't want her son to become another Freddie Gray, the man's whose death while in police custody sparked citywide violence.

"He gave me eye contact and at that point, not even thinking about cameras … that is my only son. And at the end of the day I don't want him to be a Freddie Gray. To stand up there and vandalize police officers, that's not justice. … I was angry. I was shocked. You never want to see your child out there doing that," the single mother told CBS.

Rush praised Graham for stepping up to discipline Michael, 16. And he said others needed to follow her lead, The Hill reported.

"Beside me today is an image that many across the nation have seen and it's the subject of conversation all across our country. The image of a strong black mother giving her son what I will call a low whooping — a low whooping — to snatch him back from the senseless violence that is currently plaguing the city of Baltimore, Maryland," Rush said.

As this picture demonstrates, mothers can and mothers must be the mobilizing force to take back our streets."
