Rep. Cassidy: Need Keystone for 40,000 Jobs, Energy Independence

Rep. Bill Cassidy says the Keystone XL pipeline bill currently before Congress is needed to secure 40,000 jobs and for American energy independence.

The House has passed a Keystone bill multiple times, but the Senate, led by Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid has not taken them up. Now, with Democratic Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu facing a runoff election December 6 with Cassidy, Democrats are hoping to boost Landrieu's chances by calling for a vote on Friday.

The House also plans to vote Friday on an identical bill introduced by Cassidy, but President Barack Obama has vowed to veto it.

"That's OK," Cassidy said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto." "He's on record then of opposing 40,000 jobs that would go to families that are now struggling. Now, if the president wants to be on record for that, so be it."

But Congress has the responsibility to do what is right for those 40,000 job-seekers and for the nation's energy supply, Cassidy said.

"They don't have Ph.D.'s in solar engineering," he said of those would get jobs building and maintaining TransCanada Corp's $8 billion oil pipeline. "They are the ones, though, who do construction or mining or manufacturing."

Keystone has been languishing for six years. Environmental groups oppose it, but an atypical coalition of unions and conservatives favor it.

"If it takes Sen. Landrieu's job being on the line for Harry Reid to agree to pass the legislation, so be it," Cassidy said. "Let's get it to the president's desk."
