Austin Mayor: City Ended Veteran Homelessness by Making It Priority

Austin was able to end veteran homelessness by setting the problem as a priority, the city’s Mayor Steve Adler explained after receiving praise from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for resolving the issue.

Speaking on "The Cats Roundtable" Sunday radio show on AM 970 in New York hosted by John Catsimatidis, Adler said that his municipality managed to find housing for 682 veterans after vowing to tackle the problem a few years ago, and that now when a veteran becomes homeless there is no backlog of those seeking help.

Adler said it is an “honor to serve these folks; they served us. My father was a disabled vet, and there are a lot of people in the community who wanted to honor these folks”

He said that by setting the issue as a priority, those involved said, “We’re not going to leave [this meeting] until we figure out this problem.”

Adler explained that those who had been trying to deal with the problem previously did not have the resources, but that with the involvement of the community, including the business sector, solutions were found, a model he said that could be replicated in other cities.

A 2010 goal set by the Obama Administration to end veteran homelessness nationwide by the end of 2015 has not been met, although the number of homeless veterans nationwide has fallen by nearly half since then, The Huffington Post reported.

However, there are still nearly 50,000 veterans nationwide who struggle with homelessness throughout the United States.
